The “Baylen Out Loud” Journey: How Julie and Allen Dupree’s Parenting Joy Faced the Unexpected Storm of Tourette Syndrome
October 30, 2025
When Allen and Julie Dupree welcomed their daughter, Baylen, they, like all parents, were filled with the standard joys and hopes of raising a child. Their journey, however, documented on the TLC show “Baylen Out Loud,” reveals that their path would involve unforeseen challenges that didn’t appear in the delivery room, but years later.
The difficulty in Baylen’s story was not in her physical birth, but in the sudden and dramatic onset of a severe neurological disorder that would test their family’s strength.
A Joyful Beginning
There are no public reports to suggest that Baylen’s birth was unusual or medically difficult for her mother, Julie. Baylen was born into what would become a large, bustling family in West Virginia.
Raised by Julie, a dedicated stay-at-home mom, and Allen, who works for the federal government, Baylen grew up alongside her five siblings: Burke, Sammi, Sven, Vick, and Bechnir. For years, her childhood was, by all accounts, a normal one. The true challenge for the Dupree family was not present at her birth; it was waiting around the corner in her teenage years.
The Challenge Arrives: The Onset of Tourette’s
The real “difficulty” began when Baylen started developing involuntary movements and sounds, known as tics. What might have started subtly soon escalated into a severe and complex storm of symptoms.
In 2020, Baylen was officially diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome. This was not a mild case. Her tics became extreme, including both severe motor (physical) tics and vocal tics. Most challenging of all, her diagnosis included Coprolalia—a rare and highly misunderstood symptom of Tourette’s that involves the involuntary utterance of obscene words or socially inappropriate remarks.
For Julie and Allen, this was a period of intense confusion and difficulty. They had to watch their daughter struggle with a body that she could not control. The “difficulty” was not in bringing Baylen into the world, but in helping her navigate a world that did not understand her condition.
A New Mission: Parenting Through the Storm
The diagnosis was both a relief—finally having a name for the enemy—and the start of a new battle. Allen and Julie had to adapt rapidly. Their parenting role shifted from simply raising a teenager to becoming advocates, protectors, and the primary support system for a young woman facing a daily, debilitating struggle.
They faced the challenge of public misunderstanding, social stigma, and the emotional toll the tics took on Baylen. The “Baylen Out Loud” show highlights this reality: the family’s unwavering support as Baylen faces intense “tic storms,” navigate social situations, and strives for independence.
The story of Baylen’s “birth” is less about the day she was born and more about the “birth” of her new reality with Tourette’s. The true hardship for Julie and Allen was the unexpected fight they had to join, a fight they now bravely share with the world to foster awareness and compassion.
