Deadliest Catch sets sail for season 21 with the most remote destination yet (exclusive)

If you thought Dutch Harbor was remote, just wait till you hear about Adak Island.

In Deadliest Catch season 21, which premieres Aug. 1 on the Discovery Channel, the captains will venture farther away from Alaska’s mainland than ever before.

“It is unforgiving out there in the west,” Captain Sig Hansen can be heard saying in Entertainment Weekly‘s exclusive teaser for the new season, above. Hansen’s voiceover is quickly overtaken by footage of massive waves and lots and lots of crab.

As Discovery Channel’s official synopsis of the season says, there’s billions of dollars up for grabs in monster red king crab off Adak Island, which is part of the distant Andreanof Islands in Alaska’s Aleutian Islands chain.

Here’s the full description: “When fishermen discover monster red king crab in the far west, a gold rush-style race ignites among the Dutch Harbor fleet. To claim their share of the billion-dollar bounty, captains and crews must brave unforgiving 50-foot seas to reach abandoned Adak Island, venturing farther west than anyone has dared in over 30 years and beyond the bounds of rescue.”

It continues, “Navigating through unfamiliar territory to secure the lucrative haul, the crews face extreme conditions and major ship malfunctions that put them in serious life-threatening situations, leaving the fleet at the mercy of the tumultuous western Bering Sea.”

All the water-soaked drama will be on display in the season 21 premiere as the NorthwesternTime Bandit, and Titan Explorer head for Adak Island and “chaos” on the Titan Explorer leads Captain Jake Anderson’s crew to abandon ship.
