In the high-stakes world of Bering Sea crab fishing, legends are built on guts. In Season 21 of “Deadliest Catch,” two of the sea’s most iconic captains, Sig Hansen and Johnathan Hillstrand, have combined forces—but their partnership is immediately tested by a season-defining gamble.
The scene is tense. The combined efforts of the F/V Northwestern and the F/V Time Bandit are yielding mediocre results. As they grind for small pots, Captain Sig Hansen grows restless. He spots a “pinnacle” on the map—a sharp underwater mountain far to the west, a place his partner, Johnathan, has already dismissed.
“I hate running from crab,” Hillstrand states, firm in his belief that they should stick to their current grounds. But Sig, driven by the instinct that has made him a legend, can’t let it go. “The reason why we came out here is to get these big numbers, not grind fives and tens,” he argues.
What follows is a brilliant, and risky, bit of maritime maneuvering. Knowing Hillstrand won’t agree to move, Sig pulls a classic Hansen power play. He gets on a private call with his son-in-law, Clark, who is running the Northwestern. “If you look on your plotter… there’s a little spot… to the west,” Sig whispers, practically “behind John’s back.” He pitches it as a spot for an “enterprising young man like yourself.” The order is given: “Go west, young man.”
When Hillstrand discovers that Sig has sent the other boat—his boat—on a $38,000 fuel gamble without his approval, the tension boils over. “You don’t get to gamble with my boat!” Hillstrand rages.
Sig stands his ground. “We’re out here one time! We got one shot at this!” he fires back, even offering to “write you a check for fuel.”
The entire season hangs in the balance. As the Time Bandit pulls up empty pots, the radio crackles to life. It’s Clark, 42 miles north, at Sig’s mystery spot. The first pot breaks the surface… and it’s not just full, it’s overflowing.
“How many is in that one?” the crew shouts.
The answer stops everyone cold: “Eight-zero!”

Back on the Time Bandit, Sig Hansen gets on the radio, vindicated. “I told you you love me now! You trust me now?” he beams to Johnathan. A defeated but suddenly very rich Johnathan Hillstrand can only laugh and tell Clark to “Stay there… we’re on our way.”
It was a massive risk that alienated his new partner, but as Sig Hansen says, it’s the oldest rule in the Bering Sea: “No guts, no glory.”
